2026–27For doubles players at open play

Everyone else knows where to stand. You're still doing the math on the score.

Call it first. Three quick calls before the serve tell you the score, your side and your plan before the ball is in the air.

Why open play feels so hard
4US
2THEM
1SERVER

You know the rules. So why does every serve still feel like a pop quiz?

The point is over. Somebody says "four, two… one?" and looks at you. Is it your serve? Right side or left? You shuffle over, the ball comes back, and you're stuck at mid-court again. Your partner says "it's fine, just stay back." In that voice.

Most of us try to think about everything at once while three people wait: the score, the side, the shot, the kitchen. That's a memory job, and memory is the first thing to slip when you feel rushed. Your age has nothing to do with it. The order does.

Ball first

  • Chase the ball, think later
  • Guess the score from memory
  • Stand wherever you ended up
  • Hit hard to end the point

Kitchen first

  • Three calls before the serve
  • The score tells you your side
  • Every shot buys time to move up
  • Reset soft when you're stuck
vs

Players who look calm at the net aren't faster than you. They decide earlier. Before the serve they already know the score, their side and where the point is going: up to the kitchen line.

The Kitchen-First Kit turns that habit into three calls you can practice at your kitchen table.

Try one point

Make the three calls. Then watch the court get simple.

1CallSay the score: us, them, server.
2SpotEven score: your starting side. Odd: switched.
3PlanServe: stay back. Return: go deep, move up.

The same three calls on every point, every game.

Why it works

Hitting more balls won't fix the order you think in.

Every season brings new drills and new videos, and most of them start with the ball. The Kitchen-First Method works one step earlier: before the serve, on the score and your side. That step stays the same when the rulebook changes.

Clinics and open play are great, so keep going. The kit is what you practice in between, at your own pace, with nobody waiting.

How it works

Three calls before every serve

You make them while the ball goes back to the server, before anyone says the score out loud. After every side-out you make them again, because the serving team has changed.

During the rally: three quick checks

From the Playbook, for the moments that usually go wrong.

Your shot just landed

CHECK 1 · MOVE UP

Did my shot land deep or soft?

Then take two or three steps forward and split-step as they hit. Every good shot is a ticket to the kitchen line.

step up, then stop

CHECK 2 · RESET

Am I stuck at mid-court?

Don't swing harder. Hit soft into their kitchen, make them hit up, and move up on the next ball.

slow the point down

CHECK 3 · MIDDLE

Whose ball is the middle?

Agree before the game who takes it. One word said early saves the point, and the friendship.

call it before it comes

Why we made it

You deserve to feel at home on the court.

Everyone else is already in position. You're still working out the score, wondering if you're on the wrong side.

That moment is why we made the Kitchen-First Kit.

Knowing the rules doesn't tell you what to do in the two seconds before the serve, so the kit starts there. You call the score, find your side, and know where the point is going.

The puzzles are made for a quiet coffee. Get one wrong, read the explanation, try again. The Pocket Score Card comes to the court with you.

You'll still lose points. Fewer of them to confusion, and that leaves more attention for the people you came to play with.

Before you buy

Is it for you?

Yes, if you...

  • know the basics but get lost on the score and the sides
  • are newer and open play still feels like a test
  • have played a while and keep getting stuck at mid-court
  • would rather practice at home than in front of the group

Not for you if you...

  • have never held a paddle and need to learn from zero
  • play mostly singles
  • are a 4.5+ tournament player looking for advanced tactics

Questions

Questions players ask

Is this the official rulebook?

No. It's an independent guide based on the current USA Pickleball rulebook. We explain the rules that cause arguments and point you to the official source; we don't reproduce it.

I commented on a video. Is anything free?

Yes. The 3 Calls card is free: you get it in your DMs when you comment the keyword, or from the link on this page.

Is it a one-time price?

Yes, $37 once. No subscription. The 2027 rules update is included.

I'm a beginner. Is it too advanced?

If you know how a rally works and have played a few times, it's made for you. If you've never played, take a beginner clinic first.

Does it help me get to the kitchen line?

That's the whole point. Every call and every check is about one thing: getting both of you to the kitchen line, safely.

I've played for years. Will it help me?

If you're solid at the line but still get caught at mid-court or confused by stacking, yes. If you're a 4.5+ tournament player, probably not.

What do I get, and how?

7 PDFs, delivered instantly after checkout on the thank-you page and by email.

Can I read it on my iPad or phone?

Yes. Full size on an iPad; on a phone, turn it sideways. Or print it at home.

What happens when the rules change?

When the new rulebook comes out, the updated Rules Referee and Pocket Score Card arrive by email within 14 days.

Can I share it with my group?

It's licensed for one household. Your group can get their own copy.

What if it doesn't work for me?

The 10-Session Guarantee: email us within 30 days for a full refund.
